Holomic LLC emerged from the groundbreaking mobile optical microscopy research conducted by Dr. Aydogan Ozcan of UCLA’s BioPhotonics Laboratory. Fueled by the belief that diagnostic tools should be portable and cost-effective enough to be used anywhere they are needed, Dr. Ozcan and his researchers have created modified microscopes, cytometers, and other diagnostic devices that can be attached to ordinary cell phones and used in the field.
This already award-winning technology uses lens-free attachments that allow cell phones to record digital shadows of the targeted object, which later can be digitally processed into microscopic images. Because of its small size, user-friendly cell phone interface, and relatively low cost, this portable microscope has great diagnostic potential in many situations and environments including pathology labs, food and water quality monitoring sites, and medical sites in resource-limited environments.
With a beta project expected to be out by the end of 2012, Holomic’s mobile microscopy devices have the potential to improve healthcare and food/water quality diagnostics across the globe, particularly in developing countries that historically have limited access to this kind of technology.
