Lester Brown is a Friend of Katerva

Lester R. Brown, Founder and President of the Earth Policy Institute

Katerva is really happy to call Lester Brown our friend and even more pleased that he regularly writes blogs for us on our Katerva Sustainability website and advises us as to what leaders in various aspects of reaching Global sustainability should be recognized.

When it comes to sustainability and issues regarding feeding the planet in a eco-friendly manner, Lester Brown is a visionary and a leader by all accounts.

EARLY YEARS

In his early years, he was a farmer in Southern New Jersey with his brother during high school & College. He studied agriculture science at Rutgers graduating in 1955. After graduating, Lester spent months in Indiana where he realized the US as a whole has a food vs. population issue that needs serious attention.  His keen interest in this area guided his decision to work for the department of Agriculture as a international agriculture analyst. Agricultural sustainability became a big part of his thoughts right from the early years.

MORE EDUCATION TO BECOME A SUSTAINABILITY EXPERT

Brown decided to return to school, this time at the University of Maryland to earn his Master Degree in Agricultural economics and a degree in Public Administration from Harvard. In 1964, Brown became a valued advisor to Orville Freeman, who at the time was the US secretary of Agriculture. Secretary Freeman appointed Brown to the position of Administrator of the departments Agriculture development service.

1969 LEFT OFFICE

1969 is when Lester Brown left the US government position to help establish the Overseas Development Council which he became quite active in.

FOUNDED WORLD WATCH INSTITUTE

The world watch institute was founded by Lester Brown in 1974 with financial backing from the Rockefeller Bros. Fund and was entirely devoted to the worlds environmental issues of sustainability and how to solve them. Part of that work resulted in the creation of the World Watch reports, World Watch Magazine and more.

 

WASHINGTON POST

The Washington post has referred to Lester Brown as “one of the world’s most influential speakers” and the Telegraph of Calcutta has called him the “GURU of sustainability”

US CONGRESSIONAL LIBRARY

US Congressional Library (in 1986) asked for his thoughts and idea’s noting that Browns ideas “changed the way we think about issues in regards to the worlds increasing population & its resources.”

EARTH POLICY INSTITUTE

Lester Brown founded the Earth Policy Institute in 2011 with a vision of providing a concrete plan to achieve a agricultural environment that is the foundation of a sustainable economy.
