Advancing Advanced Biofuels

Advanced Biofuels USA is an educational nonprofit dedicated to promoting the understanding, development and use of advanced biofuels around the world.

Why focus on “advanced” biofuels?

“Advanced” biofuels are those likely to provide a more sustainable biofuel option than cornstarch-based ethanols.  They are liquid fuels that are produced from non-food products and grown from lands that could not be used to produce food.  Another key characteristic is that they produce less than 50% the greenhouse gas emissions of “baseline” biofuels.  Fuels derived from cellulose (such as in  switch-grass), crop-residue, food-waste, and landfill gas, are included in this category.

The primary aim of Advanced Biofuels USA is to serve as an educational resource about this type of fuel.  With the information provided on their website, consumers, producers, legislators, researchers and investors can have a better understanding biofuels other than those made from corn.

According to founder Joanne Ivancic, Advanced Biofuels USA will “help decision-makers and opinion leaders understand how farmers, growers, researchers and industry can produce sustainable and economical biofuels that will directly replace all types of transportation fuels including gasoline and jetfuel, and thus will provide for energy security, military strategic flexibility, climate change mitigation and rural economic development.”
