An Innovative Eco City in China

Located west of Beijing, China, Mentougou EcoValley is posed to become a center of ecological research that experiments with diverse new materials, technologies and synergies between technology and nature.

The city was conceived of by Dr. Eero Paloheimo who has done extensive research on ecocities, ecovalleys, and carbon-free cities.  He believes that Mentougou EcoValley will be “the mother of all ecocities of the future.”

Mentougou EcoValley’s masterplan allows for synergies between everyday urban life and ecological innovations.  Technological innovations will spring from Western and Chinese influences. It will not only concentrate on carbon neutrality, but will also be capable of producing all its water, recirculating biological nutrients, and boosting local agriculture.  Among the city’s approaches to meeting resource challenges will be surface water collection and grey-water reuse, toilets that separate liquids and solids, and use of solar, wind and geothermal energy resources.

Mentougou Valley will be the home for a number of research institutions which plan to examine ecological food technology and ecological traffic systems.  The presence of these institutions within the city will allow for closer cooperation between national and international researchers and local operators.

Mentougou EcoValley, when complete, will have an ecological footprint one third that of a typical city of similar size.
