Predatory and illegal activities cause high deforestation in the Amazon, even in protected areas, as indigenous populations have no incentive to maintain sustained extractive production, nor have they access to markets that fairly value and compensate their production.
Scaling of the Forrest Economy through a bottom-up approach for biodiversity products in a way that appreciates the important contribution of traditional populations and indigenous peoples to promote the conservation of tropical forests, improving transparency and ethical decision making.
Establishing a network of producers, technical support institutions, businesses, and consumers, changing the conventional way of doing business & accelerating transition to a Standing Forest economy in protected areas, combining production, with conservation and promotion of valuation of environmental assets.
Focusing on the corridors of protected areas where traditional populations and indigenous peoples live, the initiative identifies and raises awareness of companies (B2B and B2C) with potential to consume these products and ingredients and connects these companies with producers, eliminating the need for middlemen, supporting and facilitating the establishment of ethical, differentiated, and long-term trade relations. Producers are registered on a digital platform, allowing the for all commercial transactions between producers and businesses to be recorded, thereby creating transparency to purchase and sale relations.Giving consumers, via a mobile phone, access to all information of production, producers and practiced trade relations. Despite having been launched only recently (2016), the network already has in excess of 1,500 members, 14 companies, 40 local organizations, marketing more than 30 products, and has established new forms of marketing, which are increasingly transparent, ethical, with better pricing and with long-term contracts.
