Biomimetics or biomimicry is the emulation of the models, systems, and elements of nature for the purpose of solving complex human problems. Given that nature has had 3.6 billion years to perfect its designs, not only is there a lot to learn from them, they also tend to be inherently sustainable. On top of it, biomimetic solution have a tendency to create radically different results - such as demonstrated in the Westgate Center in Harare, Zimbabwe, where air-conditioning costs were reduced by 90% (no typo) by applying the design principles of termite mounds. Termine mounds retain fairly constant temperatures on the inside despite widely fluctuating temperatures on the outside. Hence, biomimicry is the perfect spring board for disruptive sustainable innovation, and the step-change improvements that Katerva is looking for.
Learn how to apply biomimicry thinking to solve human challenges. Participants will jump right into practicing the steps of integrating biology into design using real human challenges. Through interactive dialogue and hands-on learning activities, the foundation of biomimicry will become familiar and tangible tools to employ in one’s work. This webinar provides an introduction to biomimicry, a new discipline that emulates nature’s best models in order to solve human design challenges.
In addition to being one of Katerva’s longstanding supporters and Experts, Jacques is the Director of Student Entrepreneurship and Blackstone Launchpad at University of California San Diego. Previously he has worked as the Business Development Manager for the City San Diego’s Economic Development Department and the Biomimicry Institute where he was the Innovation and Commercialization Manager, helping to design and launch the Biomimicry Launchpad and Ray of Hope Prize.
With a passion for learning about the natural world and an understanding of how nature could transform the corporate environment, Jacques brings this novel biomimicry approach to foster the next generation of sustainable entrepreneurs and their revolutionary businesses. Jacques advises a number of biomimicry startups such as; Aruga Technologies, Werewool and Helicoid Industries.
