“The global energy equation is one quite damaging to the atmosphere and environment. Carbon emissions are perhaps the largest problem to result from current energy systems. This category covers new technologies and innovations in energy production, storage, and delivery. It also includes technologies and initiatives focused on cleaning up current power systems.”
This is how we at Katerva set out the stall for our Energy & Power category.
The flow of electric currents is what underlies the functioning of everything. Be it the human body, plants - or the economy.
“Space is one very finite resource our planet has to offer. Efforts must be made to create sustainable systems by which important environments are replaced at the same rate or faster than they are used. This category covers programs to protect and regenerate forests, oceans, our atmosphere, and other limited environments as well as initiatives to create sustainable land use processes.” This is how we at Katerva set out the stall for our Environment category.
Moving towards sustainability is becoming more critical every day. Many see technology as our savior. There is certainly some truth in that, yet on its own it will never be enough. To quote from an article published on re-think, “Practitioners and scientists are starting to realize that we need to get better at turning behavioral science insights into real change for sustainability.” In another article the authors argue that “If environmental crisis is caused by people, then people are the solution. How can we trigger change? Insights from behavioral science provide clues.” This is of course also why 'Behavioral Change' is one of Katerva's 10 awards categories.
Feeding 9 Billion People will challenge us to embrace agricultural practices that can produce enough food without creating too much harm for the planet. The challenges associated with producing a high enough quantity of quality food is outlined in the second Sustainable Development Goal put forth by the United Nations: Zero Hunger.
